My wife saw a sign on the highway for Sal's Italian Restaurant and decided we should go - for no apparent reason but a hunch that it must be good - and why argue since we were on a road trip and hungry? As usual her hunch was spot on, and we had a great abundant meal. Dare I say the chicken parm hero rivaled my favorites back home in NY? Well it did! The shrimp appetizer in a garlic butter sauce over spinach was a great start. Wish I could have sampled more but I could see and smell as I saw other plates go by, everything looked and smelled fabulous. The service was very good, especially for how busy it was. I would be remiss to not mention the manager who made sure to swing by twice to check on us. Nice touch. I should add that it was pretty reasonably priced for these times, especially for the generous portions. And no, I don't even know Sal ‍

Ordering to go left me with a bit of a wait. This was fine as I wanted a fresh pizza, and freshness did matter; none of the subsequent bites I took of my massive Sicilian pizza was as good as the first. It was an impressively weighty creation with a beautifully browned crust, and cherry peppers and fresh mushrooms added the complexity I was looking for. My salad was a good portion and while it wasn't fancy, I appreciated the option to customize and leave out cucumbers as I'm not a fan. It also came with bread on the side, and if I'd known that I probably wouldn't have ordered garlic bread, but I'll find a use for all of it eventually. I could not accuse the place of shorting me on portions at any point.

Good family restaurant with a wide assortment of pasta and other dishes. I ordered the blackened chicken pasta, which a was tasty, although not as spicy as I expected. Although they offered plenty of bread with the meal, it was definitely mass-produced rolls and did not taste like fresh baked bread.

The best Italian food south of New York City. The Puglisese family has a series of restaurants in the New River Valley, but the mothership is Sals in Radford. There is never skipping on the ingredients or the care that is used and putting their dishes together. I can't make a recommendation because everything is excellent from their hand tossed pizzas to their veal dishes.

This evening I had a really good calzone. The food here is always good as well as the service. The service and the food always make for a relaxing atmosphere.

Radford has Sals and Sals Jr. They are not the same. Sals is our go to for Italian dishes, like Marsala or seafood pasta. They are WAY better here. Pizza is great in both spots.

Service was great. Has a "local" favorites vibe. Nostalgia feel with the "claw" arcade games. Won two rubber duckies check them out before you head to the local college game(s). The Buffalo chicken pizza has a slight kick with creaminess to it. Mini pizza was kid approved. There's a Collectible store nearby as well. Might check it out on my next visit.
